I recently travelled to Sophie Conrans Temple Guiting Manor in the Cotswolds to visit Susan D’Arcy, Times Travel writer and Spa-Confidential Blog writer, to give her a Private Make-up Lesson. She has visited the best Hotels and Spas in the world, so is definately a lady in the know! This is what she had to say……

As Yves Saint Laurent famously said “The most beautiful make-up for a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.” Not half, Yves. Problem is they’re not always that easy to apply. One of the reasons that I love spending time with make-up artists is because they’re always so generous about sharing brilliant tips on how to apply make-up properly. A couple of weeks ago, I had my face slapped, so to speak, by the lovely Sophie Everett for a shoot at the super-stylish Temple Guiting in the Cotswolds (that’s Sophie’s work, left, but it’s not me. Oh right you’d already figured that out. Of course, we only go to work in top hats if Rupert’s due a visit).
Sophie, right (that’s still not me with her, by the way), was loads of fun and a mine of information and, fittingly, one of her favourite products is YSL’s Touche Eclat to hide those dark under eyes. Her other best buys are Chantecaille Future Skin foundation. She says it makes all skin types look fantastic and yet natural. She also advises using a primer, particularly when you have a long day ahead of you, it really helps foundation stay in place and looking fresh. Her current number-one squeeze is Mac’s Prep and Prime Skin Base Visage. I already use Touche Eclat but I went out and bought the other two products immediately. I’ve been really pleased with them, especially the primer. I’ve never used one before but certainly will from now on.
She also told me how to keep my lippy looking good all night long. Slick on some balm 15 minutes before applying lipstick. First use a lip liner (that is the same colour as your lipstick) and blend into the lip. Then apply your lipstick, blot with a tissue, add a dusting of loose powder and apply a second coat. Your pout will now stay perfect for hours.
Only one slightly awkward moment, I asked Sophie what famous faces she had painted. She cited rugby player Lewis Moody (left)… I know he has captained England, which is good, but I don’t know what position he plays. Please don’t tell me he’s a hooker.
